Weds 5 July we welcomed Alice Roberts and the team from Digging for Britain to check out progress on the 2023 Chapel dig and Postern Gate excavation.Â
Chapel Appeal Launch off to flying start with castle event May 29
Hosted by Nik Gowing, our Launch event for the Chapel Appeal Fund featured specially commissioned recordings of Fayrfax music by the Hexad Collective and readings from Kilvert by Robert Bathurst. It was attended by Herefordshire High Sheriff Robert Robinson; CEO of Historic England Duncan Wilson; The Revd Antony Feltham-White, Assistant Chaplain General; and Chair of Herefordshire Council Roger Phillips, among other distinguished guests. Prayers to the 900-year history of worship at the site were offered by the Rev Luci Morriss, and a Blessing given by the Rt Rev John Oliver, Bishop of Hereford 1997-2002. Intriguing find at Chapel Site
This small alloy effigy of a saint (or is it a knight?) was found by student archaeologists at the suggested site of the castle’s Royal Free Chapel.
The find was made underneath what we think was the chapel’s Ambrey - its treasure cupboard. Have we uncovered a crime scene?
